Some stories say that they are similar to sirens, and use songs to lure sailors to their deaths, while other says that mermaids squeeze drowning sailors while trying to rescue them, killing them. Christopher Columbus had logged seeing a mermaid, but it's believed that what he might have seen was a manatee or a dugong, since he thought that they would be more attractive. The reason that it is believed that he may have seen a manatee or dugong is the fact that these mammals they carry their young cradled in their arms like a baby. Therefore, they could be easily mistaken for some type of humanlike creature to someone who has never seen one before. Another reason for the mistaken identity is attributed to the fact that manatees often surface with seaweed on their heads, giving the impression of long hair. The fact that mermaids are often said to have green or black hair is another supporting factor. Depending on the legend, a mermaid can be friendly, or can mean disaster. There are versions of the ballad Sir Patrick Spens have a mermaid speaking to ships that are doomed, saying that they will either never see land again, or that they are near it. A mermaid can also signal the weather is going to turn rough. Different authors and artists have depicted mermaids in their works. Some of them depict a beautiful woman, with long, flowing hair, and sometimes with a brush a comb. In J.K. Rowling's book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, they are described as anything but beautiful with grayish skin and long green hair, and broken yellow teeth. There have been claims of living and dead mermaid sightings in places such as British Columbia, Scotland, and Malaysia. |
